Purpose and aim of unit
Managing the employment relationship effectively is a key part of the role of the human resources (HR) practitioner. This unit aims to introduce a number of aspects of this task and to provide an introduction to employment law within the context of employee relations. It starts with an explanation of the employment relationship and the key parties that are involved within it. It then focuses on different aspects of HR activity, looking at good practice and legal requirements within each activity. It is recognised that learners need to have a basic understanding of employment law to enable them to operate effectively, but given this is a broad and complex area, it is acknowledged that this unit only aims to provide learners with the basic knowledge and assumes no prior understanding of employment law.
On completion of this unit, learners will:
- Understand the impact of employment law at the start of the employment relationship.
- Understand the main individual rights that the employee has during the employment relationship.
- Understand the issues to address at the termination of the employment relationship.
How is This Course Assessed?
These are not traditionally taught qualifications but focus more on specific personal or organisational objectives rather than solely academic theory. Units are assessed by reviewing written work based narrative, supported by evidence. Evidence takes many forms and is compiled in a portfolio that is assessed by Watson Martin experts and verified by CIPD external verifiers before awarding the qualification. There are no exams or research projects at this level.

What Our Candidates Say
Hear what our successful candidates have to say about our support, tutors, online workshops, virtual learning environment and more.
It was really important for me to have the support of an adviser throughout the programme and I couldn’t have imagined completing it successfully without Louise. The workbooks and other resources were also an inspiration as so much material is out there you need a summary to get you started.
I took some time choosing who I wanted to study with and kept coming back to Watson Martin. I liked the professional way everything was presented. As I was applying for a long term training programme, I wanted to be confident I would be studying with an organisation that provided me with face-to-face support. Watson Martin just stood out from the start
The whole learning experience with Watson Martin was excellent, just ten out of ten, with nothing needing improvement. Right from the start, everyone was so supportive, from the initial emails to the VLE online facilities which were really helpful and I used all the time.
My tutor was superb. He was very supportive at a difficult time in my career, offering suggestions and giving me contacts above and beyond what he had to do!
I had a very positive experience with Watson Martin. I liked that there was a lot of autonomy in the programme and I could complete the assignments at a pace that suited me – sometimes taking two or three weeks or two to three months. I was surprised how smoothly everything went from start to finish and how quickly we managed to get through the course. I even miss the studying now I’ve finished.
