Courtney Jones – CIPD qualified and a first HR role!

What a difference a year can make as Courtney Jones has discovered.  Not only did she secure her first role in HR in June 2021 but she recently became CIPD qualified in a matter of months.  Now with a Foundation Certificate in People Practice firmly under her belt, Courtney is ready to progress her career again by studying for her Level 5 CIPD qualification later this year. Here she tells her story…

I am an HR Coordinator with the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).  I started with CAF as a receptionist was promoted to the HR Coordinator role after a six month secondment. I started my CIPD at the same time as my new job. I self-funded as wanted to understand more about HR and to upskill myself. I also realised that being CIPD qualified is essential for most HR positions.

I have been working in some capacity since I was 14 and have had all sorts of jobs from a waitress in tea rooms to a training team leader with TK Maxx.  I have always been very driven and I was attracted to HR because it is people based.  I love helping people and providing advice.  It’s why I’m already looking forward to studying for my Level 5 CIPD because I find the advisory side of HR and knowing you can make a difference very motivating.

My adviser has been amazing

The L&D team at CAF had worked with Watson Martin before and recommended the company. My adviser Leanne Bucknor has been amazing and so supportive.  She really went above and beyond what I expected in terms of support. She motivated me throughout and gave me the confidence to keep going.  I would have given up if it wasn’t for Leanne.  She is such a great teacher and would always respond in a timely manner and made me feel there were no silly questions. She has been fantastic.

I really enjoyed the online webinars, and the study guides were brilliant.  They gave a breakdown of all the information needed to answer the questions.  All the resources provided were helpful and I had everything I needed to complete the course. I did find studying for my qualification hard at first as my work is very full on, but Leanne was so encouraging I couldn’t wait to go home and start learning! It’s been a positive experience and I would recommend Watson Martin to others.

I have the confidence and knowledge to chip in at  meetings

Having the CIPD qualification has helped me to understand why HR is so important. I now have the confidence and knowledge to chip in on the technical side at team meetings.  It’s a relatively new course so I know the knowledge gained is up to date so I can bring fresh ideas to the team. I also have a greater understanding of the employee life cycle and its importance.

I would love to manage a team and become an HR adviser in the future. I am only 22 so feel very grateful that I have found a career that I am passionate about and where I can progress. I am very lucky that I wake up every day and want to go to work.
