Emma Lovesey loves her new HR role and couldn’t be happier! Here she tells her story…

Emma Lovesey worked in a call centre after graduation and wanted to get into HR. However, entry level jobs in the profession were few and far between and companies wanted applicants with experience or a professional qualification.

Emma decided a CIPD qualification was the right way to go and enrolled on Watson Martin’s 100% online Foundation Certificate in HR Practice course, combining her studies with working full time. The move paid off and Emma is now an HR Administrator for an IT company based in London, achieving her new job as she completed her last unit of the qualification. She loves her HR role and couldn’t be happier. Here she tells her story…

After graduating from the University of Sheffield with a Degree in Psychology I went travelling for three months before COVID hit.  When I returned, the jobs market had been affected by the pandemic, but I found a role as an Energy Associate in the Customer Services Department of a Utilities company.

My interest in HR

“I became interested in an HR career at university. My dissertation was on workplace wellbeing which I enjoyed learning about, but all the jobs advertised at entry level either wanted people with experience or a CIPD qualification and I didn’t have either! I couldn’t get any experience without anyone hiring me, so I knew the only way to put myself above others in the same position was to get CIPD qualified.  Without any HR experience, I didn’t want to go straight in at Level 5 particularly when working full time, so I decided on Level 3 to see how I progressed.

Finding the right training provider

“After researching various training providers, I saw that Watson Martin offered the most flexible working arrangements for me. The company’s reputation also stood out from others, particularly its high pass rate and the expertise of its tutors.

I considered enrolling on the fast-track course but decided I didn’t want the unnecessary pressure of doing each module quickly, so I chose online delivery over 10 months allowing me to work at my own pace. In fact, I completed the qualification ahead of schedule which was an added bonus!

“I would highly recommend Watson Martin. I had Elaine Wood as my tutor who was really helpful and good at directing me particularly if I was struggling on a particular unit or over complicating things. The VLE was excellent and had lots of workbooks and resources to guide me.  I hadn’t worked in HR before and didn’t have any experiences to use so the structure of going through the workbooks was helpful and guided me through each template answer. As I completed each module I reflected on my experiences and added what I had learnt to my CV. Everything I studied fell into place when I started my new job which is a really good entry position where I am learning about lots of different aspects of HR.

My qualification showed that I was serious about progressing my career

“Achieving the CIPD definitely put me ahead of others and showed that I had gone the extra mile to increase my understanding and was serious about progressing my HR career. I don’t think I would have been offered the job without the qualification.

“I will definitely return to Watson Martin for my Level 5 when I have the time.  I was able to go at my own pace, felt very supported throughout and had access to loads of resources.  I couldn’t ask for any more than that!

The future is looking bright for Emma

Looking to the future, Emma is hoping her experience will lead to management roles in HR or help her to specialise in a particular area.  We wish her all the best as she progresses in her HR career.
