Celebrating Watson Martin’s Outstanding Personal Advisers
Our advisers are very special individuals with a wealth of industry experience and a genuine interest in the development of others. Each one of them works hard to ensure their CIPD candidate is supported throughout every step of their qualification. Our advisers really do ensure our business retains that personal touch, something we know our candidates greatly value, so we thought it was high time we publicly recognised their contribution to your CIPD success! To launch this new feature we ask Watson Martin’s ‘legal eagle’ Melinda Allison for her one piece of advice to help you gain that all important CIPD qualification along with what she loves most about her job.
Melinda Allison FCIPD
Melinda’s top tip for CIPD success
“Remember that although employment law seems to change constantly, the fundamental rights and obligations under a contract of employment remain unchanged. It is, therefore, critical to understand the basics and know where to look up the complexities. Don’t make employment law unduly complicated by over-thinking. The building blocks remain the same.”
Candidates who are supported by Melinda won’t be surprised to learn that she is one of the most experienced members of our advisory delivery team. Having joined Watson Martin in 2010, she has seen the business grow from a small practice to the CIPD benchmark centre it is today, delivering a wide range of HR and L&D programmes, Apprenticeships and in-company courses.
As an expert in employment law, Melinda has helped literally hundreds of our students to become CIPD qualified and receives brilliant feedback about her work on the independent review site Coursecheck as well as consistently high 4 and 5 star ratings.
Here’s what our candidates say about Melinda …
“Melinda Allison is amazing, she is very knowledgeable, very supportive and always made time to make me understand better,” Patricia Belbe Foundation candidate
“Melinda was EXCELLENT. Brilliant coach, tutor and sounding board. I thoroughly enjoyed working with her,” Matthew Ward Advanced candidate
“Melinda was absolutely fabulous. I really enjoyed the day and feel very comfortable in prepping for this exam now,” Beth Aspinall Advanced candidate
As well as supporting many candidates on a one-to-one basis, she is the lead at all levels for employment law and also a key member of our CIPD Advanced delivery team as an internal verifier and the main subject expert for the exam module, Leading Managing and Developing People (LMP).
Melinda began her career as an HR generalist before deciding to specialise as an HR employment law adviser and tribunal advocate. She progressed to developing her own consultancy providing Business Partner services and employment law training to clients in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors before making the move to Watson Martin. More recently, as well as advising candidates on their personal development and career paths, she has helped large corporate organisations to develop their processes and policies around employment law. Her legal updates are regularly published on our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
Melinda loves the flexibility of her role and finds it particularly rewarding to see her candidates develop in knowledge and confidence especially those who progress from Level 3 to completing their CIPD Advanced Diploma. Melinda also gets job satisfaction from starting a workshop with students thinking that employment law is the worst thing they have to spend the day thinking about but leave the room feeling energised and positive about completing their CIPD unit or module!
