Watson Martin Partnership Candidate of the Quarter Award Q4 – 2017

Congratulations to Thomas Joy, Watson Martin Partnership’s Candidate of the Quarter for December 2017, who was recently awarded the CIPD Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management.

High flier Thomas is a well-deserved recipient of the accolade having notched up no less than six distinctions, one merit and a pass to gain the prestigious qualification, which by anyone’s standards is a fantastic achievement.

Attributing his success to a passion for research along with the support he received from his ‘fantastic tutor’ WMP’s Managing Partner Melanie Martin, Thomas is already well on the way to climbing the career ladder.

Now, having completed an HR graduate training scheme with the Royal Bank of Scotland, he has been appointed an HR Consultant in the Policy and Proposition team, a wide ranging role covering everything from pensions through to the design of financial wellbeing strategy.

Watson Martin Partnership’s Candidate of the Quarter award recognises the hard work and personal dedication of individuals who go the extra mile to achieve qualification success.  Thomas is definitely a worthy candidate. Not only did he attain an outstanding set of marks, but he managed to whiz through the Advanced Diploma in 18 months, six months faster than the two years the qualification normally takes to complete.

“The most challenging part of the diploma programme was balancing it with work,” remembers Thomas.  “We’re fortunate to be part of an intensive graduate scheme, but working through academic material every evening can be a real challenge! It’s great that Watson Martin’s approach enables you to balance work experience with theoretical knowledge – it makes studying for the qualification far more practical,” he explains.

An integral part of the Human Resources graduate scheme run by RBS is the provision of a nationally recognised professional qualification in HR. All graduates on the programme enrol on the CIPD Advanced Diploma, a Masters level qualification worth 120 credits, delivered by Watson Martin Partnership. Each candidate is assigned a personal adviser to support them throughout their studies, a factor which certainly contributed to Thomas’ success.

“I can only sing the highest praise for Melanie,” he adds. “She provided a great deal of support through face to face meetings when I was in London or over the phone and gave me a really good steer on the best ways to structure and layout my thinking so I could do my absolute best throughout the qualification.”

Describing himself as a ‘curious person’ who enjoys engaging in complex topics, Thomas used his own methods to research the core material required for each assignment but found Watson Martin Partnership’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) a valuable tool to build his understanding.

Looking to the future with the Advanced Diploma under this belt, Thomas is confident that his chosen career in HR will fire him up intellectually.

“HR is not always well understood.  People typically think it’s about hiring, firing and payroll but it is so much than that and far more complex.  Working in such a highly regulated environment as a bank there are always lots of challenges which I enjoy.”
